The NYC Village Halloween Parade was founded in 1974 by Ralph Lee, a Greenwich Village puppeteer and mask maker. It originally was a small neighborhood event featuring children and homemade puppets, inspired by Lee’s belief in street theater as a way to bring art to the public. The parade quickly expanded into a full-scale parade with giant rod puppets, avant-garde costumes, and live performances.It Moved to 6th Avenue to accommodate growing crowds and became known for its inclusive spirit- drawing artists, activists, and revelers from across NYC’s diverse communities.
The parade now attracts over 50,000 costumed participants and 2 million spectators annually.Celebrated as New York’s Carnival, blending surrealism, satire, and social commentary.Deeply rooted in queer culture, artistic expression, and public participation.
